How to Say Hello in French

Whether you're entering a shop or catching up with friends, a greeting is one of the most important parts of a conversation in France. Here, you'll find several ways to say hello in French so you can get conversations rolling with native speakers.

The French Connection (film)

One of the most critically acclaimed crime thrillers of all time, William Friedkin's 1971 classic features Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider in career-defining performances as New York City narcotics detectives Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle and Buddy "Cloudy" Russo. When the pair stumble upon leads on a massive drug importation from Marseille, they begin to pursue it day and night, staking out suspects and keeping constant surveillance. Their obsession soon ensnares them in the crosshairs of a crime syndicate.

While based on a true story, the film is still rife with fiction. The film isn't without its flaws, most notably the cliched and unsubtle characterisation of Doyle and Cloudy. The movie often descends into melodrama and at times verges on the crude, with Doyle hurling the N-word and attempting to racially harass the man who stabbed his partner by asking him if he's ever picked his feet in Poughkeepsie.

A reworking of The French Connection was released in 2018, but critics have complained that it doesn't quite live up to its predecessor's high standard. It does, however, feature a spectacular car chase scene through Manhattan that's as impressive as it is thrilling to watch.

The French Connection also The french connection hello boasts an excellent soundtrack, with music by the likes of Al Schmitt and James Bond songwriter John Barry. It isn't as catchy as the film's iconic title track, but it is just as memorable.

French Connection (brand)

The brand's name has become synonymous with fashionable and functional fashion, but it wasn't always such a success. In fact, it was in financial crisis by 1992, with pre-tax losses of PS5m and a share price of just 16p. In order to save the company, Marks went to great lengths to cut costs, even selling the loss-making Nicole Farhi label and shutting 17 of its 23 stores in the US and Japan.

Although the French Connection has its critics, it has become a widely beloved and enduring icon, especially amongst those who are fans of stylish clothing and urban culture. The company has since rebranded and expanded, including opening up a number of retail outlets in the UK as well as launching tennis academies worldwide. It is currently owned by the billionaire Philip Green, who in 2015 reported that sales of the label had increased by 40% over the previous year. Its latest collections have been designed to appeal to a younger generation of fashionistas.
