Despite their differences, Shinji and Asuka share a bond of friendship. She is his best friend and confidant. He looks up to her as a mentor, and she tolerates behavior from him that he would disapprove of in others. For example, when Kaji asks about Misato’s sleeping habits and hints that they might be in a relationship, Shinji laughs it off rather than being embarrassed.

In addition, she has a close relationship with Ritsuko, who is like a mother figure to him. She teaches him to read and write, and she also helps him understand Gendo’s decisions at NERV. Unlike Misato, she is more understanding of the suffering that Shinji goes through as a pilot. She even chides him for his cynical attitude toward Gendo.

However, when Shinji witnesses her burns from holding the scalding metal, he realizes that she is a true friend and decides to forgive her. In the final episode, he sees her again at NERV and tells her that he is sorry for what happened with Touji.

The next time Shinji visits NERV, he is surprised to find that Rei is happily chatting with Gendo. She explains that she was hurt when Gendo put his hands on the scalding metal to save her, and Shinji understands why she had such strong feelings for him. They later share a tender moment together when she thanks Shinji for teaching her many things and asks him if they will meet again someday. Their conversation ends with a mutual smile.
